Gouache Portrait of a Tree

Gouache Portrait of a Tree

This is a recent Gouache painting I finished, using a reference photo I took at a local park. I didn't take any pictures throughout the process, but here are some I took once I finished it, and also some closeups.

I used Winsor and Newton Designers gouache in a fairly limited palette: Zinc White, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Prussian Blue, Vandyke Brown, Viridian, and Brilliant Yellow.

For my gouache palette I use an old colored pencil tin(like the one James Gurney uses for his Gouache Paintings) spray painted white on the inside. I put my colors on a very wet folded paper towel so that they don't dry out. Using this method allows me to leave the palette for at least a few days without the paints drying up, as long as I cover it.

And here is my reference photo that I used, as you can see I used my "artistic license" to change a few things, but for the most part though I followed it as much as I could.
